ABB AS

We believe that modern ships will be built on the foundation of electricity. This expands their range of viable energy sources beyond traditional fuel to for instance batteries and fuel cells. The electrical backbone, integrated with automation and control systems, will also transform the industry from merely connected operations to collaborative and automated operations.

Electric propulsion has been the standard for large ships for more than 20 years and we also have newly designed power system concept suitable for smaller vessels. The footprint is into a compact packaging. Silent and emission free transportation will soon be the standard for all ships. Our system supports both purely battery powered and hybrid electric propulsion. Charging electrical energy from shore is convenient and cost saving. Efficient auxiliary engines increase range and flexibility if needed. When powered from batteries the silent operation contributes to a good work environment onboard as well as to the surroundings. Silence is also appreciated below the sea level…

Reliable, space saving and low maintenance equipment is selected from ABB and trusted partners.

Energy efficient reliability on board

Anywhere a motor is used on board is a great opportunity to save energy. Our marine certified variable frequency drives (VFD) regulate the speed and torque of motors so they run accurately according to the demand. From propulsion systems, thrusters, deck machinery, pumps, HVAC systems, to deck cranes, our medium and low voltage drives help you use fuel more efficiently and reduce maintenance needs. Our drives are also key elements of your shaft generators and offshore pipe-laying systems. We provide global support, life cycle services and strong application expertise to help you get the full benefit from our drives.

Equipment quality. Reliable operation. Fuel savings. Electrification. Everything counts when you depend on your motor-driven applications to do what you expect.

ABB’s scope of supply consists of an electric, digital and connected propulsion package comprised of drives, motors, the energy storage system including a battery pack, low voltage switchboards, and a power energy management system. ABB can also oversee all systems engineering, project management and commissioning. We can also offer a full range of remote diagnostic services.

Small vessel electrifcation - battery and hybrid

Managing harmonics - Prevention is better than a cure for the symptoms – ABB ultra-low harmonic drives

Posted 2020-08-18 00:27:10

Instead of trying to tackle harmonics by often ineffective actions, like adding cooling or over-dimensioning equipment, why not employ equipment that do not cause harmonics in the first place?

Low harmonic content

Our ultra-low harmonic drive produces exceptionally low harmonic content and exceeds requirements set by low harmonic standards. Compared to a conventional drive, the harmonic content is reduced by up to 97%. The total harmonic current distortion is typically 3%. With a passive filter the typical total harmonic distortion is between 5 to 10%.

Norway’s ports reduce emissions with ABB shore-to-ship power technology

Posted 2020-08-18 00:26:38

New shore-to-ship power in Norway’s ports can potentially reduce nearly 15,000 tons of carbon emissions each year

Offshore support vessels (OSVs) can now switch off their diesel generators in some of Norway’s major docks and plug-in to shoreside power. NorSea Group, a company that provides offshore support services, is using ABB drives to support shore-to-ship technology at four of its bases along Norway’s coast. The new facilities allow OSVs to cut their diesel generators while docked and plug-in to the port electricity supply.

Evoy - Norsk elbåt-eventyr med frekvensomformere fra ABB

Posted 2020-08-18 00:26:03

Feeding the world responsibly and sustainably with Artificial Intelligence

Posted 2020-08-18 00:24:57

With an increasing global population, the urgency to find new and innovative ways to address food demand is felt around the world. Since 1970, fish farming has existed in the Nordics and developed into a major industry. Norway Royal Salmon (NRS) is a leading producer of sustainable salmon, selling about 70,000 tons of salmon every year. This equates to one million salmon meals per day, all year round.

ABB wins hybrid power order for sustainable live fish carrier

Posted 2020-08-18 00:24:25

Færøysund live fish carrier is set to become one of the most environmentally friendly vessels of its kind, thanks to ABB’s power and energy system

As the first live fish carrier to feature ABB hybrid power and propulsion solution with integral energy storage, Færøysund responds to a wider green shift in the maritime industry, with consumers demanding greater accountability in the food supply chain.

The 77m-long diesel-electric vessel is being built at the Aas Mek. Verksted AS shipyard in Vestnes, Norway, for Nova Sea Service AS, one of Norway’s largest producers of Atlantic farmed salmon. Due delivery in September 2021, Færøysund is Aas Mek. Verksted AS second newbuild for Nova Sea Service AS.

Drives and motors for electrically driven marine deck machinery and offshore winches

Posted 2020-08-18 00:23:24

Performance. Speed. Reliability. Everything counts when building and running your deck winches.

Your deck machinery needs to work reliably while meeting the tightest turnaround times with the smoothest, uninterrupted operation. That's why we developed our marine certified variable frequency drives (VFD) with dedicated winch control program. This program with our direct torque control (DTC) gives the added benefit of eliminating the need for motor encoders or load cell sensors, reducing your part count and reducing maintenance.
